What is the Certified Professional Medical Auditor credential?

This CPMA exam preparation program takes your coding experience into auditing. You will learn to review medical records, validate the accuracy of coding and documentation, and evaluate compliance with federal regulations and payer policies.

When to enroll

Our CPMA program is built for experienced coders, billers, and compliance professionals who want to specialize in medical auditing. It directly complements a credential such as the CPC, COC, or CRC.

Self-paced: study after your shift, on the weekend, or whenever your schedule allows.

What you will learn

Master the full audit cycle: planning, statistical sampling, medical record abstraction, risk analysis, and communicating findings. Learn to identify undercoding, overcoding, and unbundling, and to apply OIG, CMS, and NCCI guidelines together with payer policies.

Recommended preparation

AAPC recommends at least two years of coding experience before taking the CPMA exam, along with a solid foundation in medical terminology, anatomy, and pathophysiology.

To build that foundation, Codingforhealth offers CPC preparation and the Medical Terminology and Anatomy course.

Frequently asked questions

What is the CPMA?

Certified Professional Medical Auditor (CPMA) is an AAPC credential focused on medical auditing: reviewing medical records, coding and documentation accuracy, and compliance with federal regulations and payer policies.

What is the difference between the CPC and the CPMA?

The CPC concentrates on assigning codes for professional services. The CPMA concentrates on auditing that work: reviewing documentation, validating codes, and evaluating regulatory compliance. That is why AAPC recommends it for those who already have coding experience.

How is this program delivered?

Codingforhealth’s CPMA preparation is online, taught in Spanish, and self-paced.

What does the CPMA exam assess?

The exam assesses seven areas: Medical Record Standards and Documentation Guidelines, Compliance and Regulatory Guidelines, Coding and Reimbursement Concepts, Scope and Statistical Sampling Methodologies, Quality Assurance and Risk Analysis, Communication of Results and Findings, and Medical Record Auditing Abstraction. The last one is answered by auditing about 15 cases.

How long is the exam?

The CPMA exam has 100 multiple-choice questions and allows four hours to complete, in one sitting. It can be taken online from home with a live remote proctor, or at a testing center.

Which code books does the exam use?

The CPMA exam is open book. AAPC allows the AMA’s CPT® Professional Edition and the ICD-10-CM and HCPCS Level II code books, under its current requirements for the exam year.

How is the credential maintained?

AAPC asks you to keep an active annual membership and complete 40 CEUs every two years.
